Chao is senior curator of Asian art at the Crow Museum of Asian art at The University of Texas at Dallas. Her curated exhibitions have presented works ranging from the historical to the contemporary in all medias from emerging and established artists from across the globe. This presentation focuses on current and recently curated contemporary Asian art exhibition projects and programs that have aspired to position works by contemporary artists of Asian descent in expanded art historical, theoretical, and philosophical frameworks, with particular emphasis on expanding the profile of contemporary female artists of Asian descent as well as developing new community collaborations. Some recent projects include: Cultural Ecologies of Asia (2021), Born of Fire: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists (2021), Divine Spark: Kana Harada (2021), Beili Liu: One and Another (2020), Invisible Cities: Moving Images Asia (2017).

About the Visiting Artists, Designers, and Scholars (VADS) Program at Ball State University

Each year the School of Art invites a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized artists, designers, and scholars to share their distinct practices and voices with its students and the community. Students and the public alike can engage with these invited practitioners through lectures, screenings, performances, readings, conversations, studio critiques, and workshops. This program is one of many valuable resources promoted through the School of Art that contributes to the experiences art students need to begin building relationships within the professional art world and to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and culture. All events are free, non-ticketed, and open to the public unless otherwise specified.
